Greece has been assessing the damage caused by wildfires that raged through the outskirts of Athens, forcing mass evacuations and killing at least one person. The fires broke out on Sunday near Varnavas, 22 miles (35km) north-east of Athens, and advanced very rapidly towards the capital, fanned by gale-force winds. Greece has had an exceptionally hot and dry summer. July was its hottest on record, and successive heatwaves have turned terrain across the Mediterranean country into a tinderbox
