Countries question legal basis for ‘unilateral’ move after indications funding decisions would be made at meeting on Tuesday
The EU has announced a suspension of almost €700m (£605m) in payments to the Palestinians as a result of Hamas’s attacks on Israel, prompting a diplomatic row with Ireland saying there was no legal basis for the “unilateral” move.
Olivér Várhelyi, the European commissioner for neighbourhood and enlargement, announced that “all payments [were] immediately suspended” and “all projects put under review” in a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Monday afternoon. “There can be no basis for business as usual,” he said.
