Greece train crash: at least 36 killed and dozens injured in collision

Head-on crash between passenger and cargo trains happened near Tempe, close to central city of Larissa

The death toll from the collision of two trains in central Greece has risen as authorities announced that at least 36 people had been killed and scores injured with several of the wounded in critical condition.

As rescue workers stepped up efforts to find survivors amid the still-smoking wreckage – more than 10 hours after the crash – the Greek fire brigade said 66 of the estimated 85 people hurt in the collision had been taken to hospitals in nearby Larissa. Six are in intensive care.
