More than a million people gathered in the French capital to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks display. Crowds massed along the Champs-Élysées to celebrate the start of 2023, after two years of Covid cancellations. ‘It was almost 2 million people if you take the wider perimeter,’ said the interior minister, Gérald Darmanin.
