German finance minister joins calls for US-EU talks after Trump tariff threat

Lars Klingbeil says Europe needs ‘serious negotiations not further provocations’

Germany’s finance minister has joined a chorus of European politicians in calling for talks with the US after Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on imports from Europe starting next week.

Later on Sunday, however, Ursula von der Leyen, the EU president, announced in a social media post that she had spoken with Trump and secured a delay until 9 July to give the two sides more time to negotiate.
